Pepernoot Stitching

by Sadie Fox Studio in

Our Pepernoot sew-a-long team started off by making pockets. It really is exciting to see the fabric and zipper choices in action. After that the coats really started to come together quickly. I love the shape of the back yoke seam. It is a lovely detail.

I have fallen in love with the fabric I purchased for my Pepernoot and the bright blue lining is going to be just the right pop of color. Lucky for me the recent snow storm in Denver will allow me the chance to get some good use out of my new super cute coat!

The luscious fabric my friend, & student, Norma picked out for her coat is a classic muted sage green wool. She is adding a super fun surprise of gold piping, gold zippers and hot pink lining! I can't wait to see her in it!

Claudia, of Sew You Studio, picked out an unexpected and crazy cute fabric combo for her coat! I can see this coat hanging in the window of a super hip boutique. I am going to have coat envy for sure!

This Waffle pattern is super easy to follow and I absolutely love the visual diagrams for each step of the process. The layered pattern printing is great and I love that I can print off just my size. I am looking forward to stitching up one of their other patterns very soon!

Mother & Daughter Spring Sewing

by Sadie Fox Studio in

We do lots of crafting and sewing in our house during the dark winter months. Lately I have been dreaming about spring and summer fashions for me and my two daughters. As the days get longer we are finding less and less time to craft and sew. I want simple and sweet clothes to make that are fun and easy to wear. Here is a roundup of what is on my sewing "to do" pile for spring and summer sewing.

1) First up is a skirt by Colorado artists Mckay Manor Musers. They are a mother, daughter, daughter trio that had a booth at the Quilt, Craft and Sewing Festival that took place last month here in Denver. I am a big fan of ruffle fabric. I have used it before for skirts and flowy yoga pants. This skirt is super simple to make and is based on your own measurements. So you are sure to get a perfect fit and customized length. While you are on their site be sure to check out all of their patterns, including adorable animal stuffies and super soft throws.

2) Next up is this easy to sew & easy to wear summer tunic by BurdaStyle. This is a Plus Size pattern that could easily be adjusted to fit any size. I plan to make it out of this gorgeous rayon by Cotton + Steel.

3) Of course my girls are going to want summery kaftans too! Here is a sweet pattern by The Pattern Emporium. The Pattern Emporium is the work of Kate. A fashion designer & mom of five living and working in Queensland, Australia.

4) Last, but not least is the Poppy Tunic by Make It Perfect patterns. This tunic has such a retro fun vibe to me. I discovered the pattern on Indiesew. I am going to make a bunch of these and wear them all spring and summer. I bet I can even layer them in the fall as well. A few years ago I made up a bunch of the Shearwater Kaftans by the same pattern designer. I just discovered there is a kids version of this top! Put that on my "to do" list too!

Lovely Lace

by Sadie Fox Studio in

I have been thinking about and working with lace lately. It is such a feminine and delicate fabric.

Have you ever wondered how lace is made? I took my daughter this past Friday to the Denver Quilt, Craft & Sewing Festival. The Rocky Mountain Lace Guild had a booth at the festival and they were giving demonstrations. There, my daughter tried making bobbin lace.

In my research I found this great video about how machine lace fabric is made.

Lace is traditionally used in bridal and special occasion fashion. However, I love the use of lace in everyday wear. A lace top can make a plain pair of jeans feel dressy and special. Cotton lace fabric can be turned into flirty summer caftans or swimsuit coverups.

A great place in Denver to purchase lace is Colorado Fabrics. If shopping online check out Gorgeous Fabrics for their selection of lace.

When we were at the festival I purchased some lovely lace trim and other lace bits to incorporate into collars and plackets at the Trims On Wheels booth. I imagine sewing up some summer tunics and tops with lace touches at the neck and bodice.

If you are looking for a simple sewing project to add lace into your spring/summer wardrobe, here is a tutorial on how to add lace to the bottom of a basic t-shirt. I love how it looks!
